A Little Prayer for You

I Whisper a Little Prayer for You

In a dark room, on my knees, bowing to God, the heavens, the moon—
I whisper a little prayer for you.

As the words leak through the gaps in my teeth,
press against my lips,
and slip off my tongue—
I whisper a little prayer for you.

The words dance in the air,
like sound, they travel.
Through the cracks of my window,
I hope they reach you.

Angels capture the words in their palms,
carry them to heaven,
and place them in the mailbox of the divine.

I lay awake,
counting the days until I see a sign—
proof they’ve been delivered.

Before I entered this earth,
I was commanded in spirit to see about you,
and I agreed.
Bound by that promise,
I form each word with care.

I picture your face—your smile.
I see you.
I beg and plead
for you to be kept safe:
safe in spirit,
safe in mind,
steady in heart.

I whisper a little prayer for you.

I wish I could sit still,
count the speckles of dust on the walls,
but I can’t.

The days move on and I move with it.

Seconds, minutes, hours, days—
they pass,
and still, you remain in my thoughts.

I summon your image each day,
fragile as it is.
If I do this,
how could I ever forget you?

I hope to never forget you.
I try not to miss you.
I wear you—
in the way I fix my hair,
the way I dress,
the subtle tones of my voice.

You drape around me like a cloak.

I whisper a little prayer for you.

It seeps beneath your door,
rises into the air,
and you breathe it in.
You feel me.

The essence of me makes you smile.
The words unwrap in your mind.
With every layer, your heart flutters.
They were spoken gently.

I hope they soothe you.
I hope they heal places
I couldn’t sense were aching.

I hope they rejuvenate your soul,
put a twinkle in your eye,
and remind you:
you are loved.

I hope they awaken the power
that lay dormant within you.
I hope they help you rediscover your dreams
and chase them with force.

I hope they show you
what I see in you.

I hope they make you look in the mirror
and love who you see.

And I hope,
one day,
they inspire you to whisper a little prayer yourself—
one that includes me.
